WWB has been designated as a Comprehensive Support and Improvement school for very low student performance. This project will allow the Council to address one of the top recommendations from the Education & Economic Opportunity subcommittee of Mayor Linda Gorton\u2019s Commission for Racial Justice & Equity: \u201cseek opportunities for expansion to serve additional children under three years old.\u201d Annually, the Council will serve as many as 40 children in the WWB community who miss the \u201ccut off\u201d date for preschool eligibility because they turn four years of age after August 1st. The Council will be able to provide one full year of high-quality early childhood education and comprehensive family support services before they enter public school. The costs of child care are a heavy financial burden for many families today\u2014especially, but not exclusively, families with low income. The Council\u2019s Head Start programs help many families achieve self-sufficiency by enabling adults to access reliable, high-quality, safe care for their children while they work for pay outside the home.
